The hidden gem of Portugal’s Dão Valley
During my trip through Portugal, I entered the Dão Valley, a region in the centre of the country that is not yet well known but which makes an immediate and unforgettable impression. At its heart, surrounded by ancient vineyards and rolling hills, I discovered a special place in Santar: the Santar Vila Jardim Gardens. Here, you can literally walk through living history in perfect deep travel style.
The extraordinary Santar Vila Jardim project makes Santar unique. Here, the boundaries between centuries-old estates have broken down, creating a different kind of landscape. Where high walls once separated families, you now stroll freely from one garden to another. The result? A green maze of historic gardens, vineyards, and hidden passages right in the middle of a peaceful village.
A guided tour in Santar
Our guided tour with Ana begins inside the House of the Counts of Santar and Magalhães. It’s a 16th-century country manor still partly occupied by the family, which is exactly what makes it so special. You experience history up close, and because you can’t take photos, it feels like a well-kept secret. Passing by the old wardrobe, the authentic kitchen, and the carriage room, you’re immersed in times past.
For a vision behind the landscape, you can see a model of the garden complex designed by landscape architect Fernando Caruncho. The core concept is to connect the six gardens and make the walls disappear.
Walking Through Living History
The first garden still belongs to the family, classically arranged, because of their Italian heritage. Expect symmetrical lines and perfectly manicured box hedges. With the stately house in the background, you sense how the past and present blend.
You wander through hidden doorways, up small staircases, and through unexpected passages from one garden to the next. Along the way, you pass tiny vineyards, magnolia gardens, and fragrant rose arches, each with details such as fountains, statues, and secluded spots where time seems to stand still.
The spot that touches me the most is the community’s shared vegetable garden.
“It’s not just a place full of vegetables, herbs and fruit trees, but above all a place of connection,” says Ana.
It shows the powerful idea of taking care of the land together.
A Royal Stay in Santar
After exploring the gardens, there’s reason to go even deeper. I check in at the Valverde Santar Hotel & Spa, an impressive white building with twenty rooms, located in the heart of the village. As soon as you step inside, it feels as if you are entering a museum and travelling back to the 18th century. You sense the historical grandeur through the carefully preserved details.
After checking in, another guide, also named Ana, takes me on an extensive tour through the hotel. It once belonged to the noble Bragança family. As you walk through the high corridors, the history of the families who lived here makes itself felt.
Stories Frozen in Time
The authentic furniture, ornaments, and painted ceilings never fail to impress. Ana leads us through libraries full of old books and stately salons until we reach the dining room. There, she points toward the ceiling and explains the significance of the decor.
“The plates on the ceiling serve as a symbolic tribute to the ‘last supper’ of the three sisters,” Ana says. “They were the last generation to live here. Their departure became eternal in art, and their history remains almost touchable for everyone who visits.”
Even a small altar has remained completely intact and invites silence and time to reflect. The serene atmosphere creates a beautiful complement to the rest of the stately house.
Gardens, Views & Village Life in Santar, Portugal
We then step outside and into a garden of the estate, part of one of the six gardens. It’s enormous, and you could easily lose your way, to give you an idea of its royal scale. We walk past fruit trees about to bloom, pass the swimming pool blending into the landscape, and finally come to a small church where they hold mass every Sunday. Ana points out an idyllic spot where wedding proposals happen quite often. The vineyards stretch as far as the horizon from here. A place you’ll happily wander through again.
The fact that people really lived here makes it all the more impressive.
“If Portugal were still a kingdom, the king or queen would undoubtedly have lived here,” Ana says.
You can feel that royal allure in every room and with every step through the gardens.
Modern Comfort Meets History
After this walk, I explore the modern spa, a stylishly designed oasis complete with a long swimming pool, sauna, hammam, and massage rooms. The architecture contrasts pleasingly with the historic main building, bringing old and new together beautifully.
An Evening to Remember
I end the day on the veranda, which overlooks the garden, while the heaters gently burn. Dinner is a series of pure flavour sensations. Octopus with cauliflower purée, cod in bean sauce, and a chocolate mousse with sautéed hazelnuts. All perfectly paired with wines from the region. Afterwards, I retreat to our “royal suite” and fall asleep under a painted ceiling. For once, I truly feel like a princess.
The following morning, I took one last look at the gardens before leaving. In the shop, I bought a bottle of local wine called Memórias de Santar as a memento. A true taste of the region to savour later and transport me back to this moment.

The Dão Valley is a hidden gem waiting for you to explore. It’s a place where silence, history, endless vineyards and nature come together, and where time sometimes seems to stand still, enabling you to recharge. What stands out most is the strong sense of community in the village of Santar, which leaves a lasting impression.
